Epilepsy is a neurological disorder marked by recurrent, unprovoked seizures caused by sudden bursts of electrical activity in the brain. Seizures can vary in type and intensity, and not all involve convulsions. Effective management starts with an accurate diagnosis, often using EEG and brain imaging. Treatment usually includes medication, but in some cases, surgery or lifestyle adjustments are needed. If you witness someone having a seizure, stay calm, move any dangerous objects away, and gently turn the person on their side. Do not put anything in their mouth. Understanding epilepsy—and how to respond in a seizure—can make a real difference in someone’s safety and quality of life.
