A warm welcome to all the medical professionals in this interesting session on You might know this as Long COVID. - By Dr. Ashwini Avashiti.
Long COVID, also known as post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), refers to a range of symptoms that persist for weeks or months after the acute phase of a COVID-19 infection has resolved. Dr. Ashwini Avashiti explains that individuals with Long COVID may experience a variety of lingering symptoms, including fatigue, shortness of breath, cognitive difficulties often termed "brain fog," chest pain, and joint or muscle pain. These symptoms can fluctuate in intensity and may impact multiple organ systems, significantly affecting the quality of life.
Dr. Avashiti notes that while the exact mechanisms behind Long COVID are not fully understood, potential causes include ongoing inflammatory responses, immune system dysregulation, and residual viral particles. The condition can affect anyone who has had COVID-19, regardless of the severity of their initial illness. Diagnosis is primarily based on patient history and symptom presentation, as there are no specific tests for Long COVID.
Management of Long COVID often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including physical therapy, cognitive rehabilitation, and symptom-specific treatments. Dr. Avashiti emphasizes the importance of personalized care and ongoing research to better understand and treat this complex condition, as well as support for patients through dedicated Long COVID clinics and support groups.
