Thyroid disorders are characterized by the gland's inability to produce the right amount of thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, resulting from underproduction and overproduction of these hormones respectively, are the most common conditions. They often present with symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes, and mood swings, making diagnosis challenging due to the overlap with other illnesses.
Diagnosis typically involves comprehensive patient history, physical examination, and thyroid function tests. In some cases, imaging studies and biopsies may be required. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the disorder. Hypothyroidism is usually managed with levothyroxine, while hyperthyroidism may be treated with antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine, or surgery.
Autoimmune disorders such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease are significant contributors to thyroid dysfunction. The former leads to hypothyroidism and the latter to hyperthyroidism. Understanding the role of autoimmunity in thyroid disorders is crucial for developing targeted therapies.
