Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily affecting the motor system, with a global prevalence of 1% in individuals over 60. A comprehensive understanding of PD is crucial for healthcare professionals to facilitate optimal patient care.
PD is characterized by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, leading to dopamine deficiency. The etiology is multifactorial, involving genetic predisposition and environmental factors, with aging being the most significant risk factor.
Cardinal symptoms include bradykinesia, resting tremor, rigidity, and postural instability. Non-motor symptoms such as depression, cognitive impairment, and autonomic dysfunction are also common.
Treatment is symptomatic, with levodopa being the most effective medication. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) may be considered in advanced cases. Multidisciplinary care involving physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and neuropsychology is essential.
Comprehending the complexity of PD aids in its effective management. As healthcare professionals, we must stay abreast of the latest advancements in PD research to provide the best care for our patients.
