Lifestyle changes, such as avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, can also help reduce the risk of stroke. In some cases, surgery may be recommended to improve blood flow to the brain. The most common type of surgery is an endovascular procedure, which involves inserting a tube into the brain to open clogged arteries. Other surgical procedures, such as bypass surgery and direct revascularization, may also be recommended.
New Hope for Treatment

For example, a new imaging technique called “magnetoencephalography” (MEG) can provide detailed information about the brain’s blood flow and oxygen levels. In addition, new surgical techniques, such as the “stent-assisted coiling” procedure, can be used to open clogged arteries and improve blood flow to the brain. This procedure is less invasive than traditional bypass surgery and can be used to treat both adults and children with moyamoya disease.
