Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder that affects approximately 10-15% of the global population. It is characterized by chronic abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits, significantly impacting patients' quality of life.
Diagnosis primarily relies on the Rome IV criteria, which includes recurrent abdominal pain for at least one day per week in the last three months, associated with two or more of the following: related to defecation, change in stool frequency, or change in stool form.
Management of IBS requires a multi-faceted approach. Lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management are beneficial. Dietary modifications including low-FODMAP (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols) diet have shown promising results. Pharmacologic treatments include antispasmodics, probiotics, and antidepressants.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and hypnotherapy are useful adjuncts in managing IBS, particularly in patients with associated psychological comorbidities.
Effective management of IBS requires a comprehensive, patient-centered approach. Further research is needed to refine these strategies and improve patient outcomes.
