Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) is a complex and progressive disease characterized by elevated pulmonary artery pressure. This guide aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the disease's pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment options.
PH is primarily a disorder of the small pulmonary arteries, resulting in their narrowing or obliteration. Treatment of PH is aimed at improving symptoms, slowing disease progression, and enhancing survival. It involves general measures, drug therapy, and in severe cases, lung transplantation. Pharmacological therapy includes endothelin receptor antagonists, phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, and prostacyclin analogs. Emerging therapies targeting the inflammatory and metabolic aspects of the disease are currently under investigation.
Healthcare professionals play a critical role in the early identification, management, and follow-up of patients with PH. Multidisciplinary approach involving cardiologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, and pathologists is often necessary. Regular patient education and counseling are also integral components of management.
In conclusion, PH is a complex disease requiring a comprehensive understanding of its pathophysiology, diagnostic approaches, and treatment options. Early recognition and appropriate management by healthcare professionals can significantly improve patient outcomes.
