Assessing cardiovascular risk in diabetic patients involves a multifactorial approach. Key risk factors include poor glycemic control, hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, and smoking. Tools such as the UKPDS risk engine can aid in quantifying cardiovascular risk in Type 2 diabetes. Regular screening for microvascular complications, such as retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy, is also essential as these may be harbingers of macrovascular disease.
Effective risk mitigation strategies involve both lifestyle modifications and pharmacological interventions. Encouraging patients to adopt a healthy diet, engage in regular physical activity, and cease smoking are critical steps. Pharmacologically, optimal control of blood glucose, blood pressure, and lipid levels is paramount. The use of statins, ACE inhibitors, and aspirin may also be beneficial in certain patient cohorts.
Recent advancements have seen the advent of newer antidiabetic agents, such as SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists, which have demonstrated cardiovascular benefits.
