Several new lipid-lowering drugs have emerged, notably PCSK9 inhibitors such as alirocumab and evolocumab, which have been shown to significantly reduce LDL cholesterol levels. Bempedoic acid, a novel ATP citrate lyase inhibitor, is another promising addition with demonstrated efficacy in reducing LDL cholesterol levels, particularly in patients intolerant to statins.
Genetic screening for familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) has become more accessible, enabling early detection and treatment. This has immense implications for preventive cardiology, as individuals with FH are at high risk for premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
