Stroke remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Early recognition and prompt intervention can significantly improve patient outcomes. This article aims to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive guide to early stroke recognition and management.
Stroke symptoms typically occur suddenly and may include: numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech; difficulty seeing in one or both eyes; trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination; severe headache with no known cause. The acronym FAST (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911) can be useful in identifying stroke symptoms quickly.
Initial management of suspected stroke includes stabilizing the patient, ensuring adequate oxygenation, and obtaining a non-contrast CT scan of the head to differentiate between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. In cases of ischemic stroke, intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) may be administered if the patient presents within 4.5 hours of symptom onset and there are no contraindications.
Secondary prevention strategies aim to reduce the risk of recurrent stroke. These include lifestyle modifications (smoking cessation, healthy diet, regular exercise), blood pressure control, lipid management, and antithrombotic therapy. In patients with non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), antiplatelet agents such as aspirin or clopidogrel are recommended.
Early recognition and management of stroke can significantly improve patient outcomes. Healthcare professionals play a critical role in this process. Continued education on stroke recognition and management is essential to ensure optimal patient care.
