Vertigo is a subjective sensation, often described as feeling off-balance, dizzy, or experiencing a sensation of spinning. It is important to differentiate vertigo from other forms of dizziness, such as presyncope, disequilibrium, or lightheadedness. Vertigo is typically caused by a disturbance in the balance organs of the inner ear or the brain areas involved in balance maintenance.
Effective management of vertigo begins with a thorough clinical evaluation. It is crucial to obtain a detailed history, focusing on the onset, duration, frequency, and nature of the vertigo episodes. Physical examination should include a neurological examination and tests of vestibular function. Diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests may be required based on the clinical suspicion.
Management of vertigo involves treating the underlying cause, symptomatic relief, and vestibular rehabilitation. Pharmacological therapy includes medications for symptomatic relief, such as antihistamines, benzodiazepines, and antiemetics. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy is an important aspect of management, especially for patients with chronic vertigo.
Vertigo is a complex symptom that requires a systematic and comprehensive approach for its effective management. Understanding its pathophysiology, conducting a thorough clinical evaluation, and implementing appropriate management strategies are key to improving patient outcomes. As healthcare professionals, staying updated on the latest advancements in this area will enable us to provide the best possible care to our patients experiencing vertigo.
