Inappropriate use, such as unnecessary prescriptions or incorrect dosing, can contribute to antibiotic resistance and adverse patient outcomes.
Antibiotic stewardship programs (ASPs) are coordinated interventions designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antibiotics by promoting the selection of optimal antibiotic drug regimens. They include dose, duration of therapy, and route of administration. ASPs have been shown to enhance patient outcomes, reduce antibiotic resistance, and decrease unnecessary costs.
Empowering patients with knowledge about the appropriate use of antibiotics can help curb misuse. Patient education should focus on the purpose of antibiotics, the risks of misuse, and the importance of adhering to prescribed treatment regimens.
To mitigate the threat of antibiotic resistance, it is imperative that healthcare professionals adopt a rational approach to antibiotic use. This involves understanding and applying principles of antibiotic stewardship, and educating patients about the appropriate use of these vital drugs. By doing so, we can promote patient health and ensure the longevity of effective antibiotic therapy.
