The financial burden on the healthcare system is also substantial, with the cost of drug-related morbidity and mortality exceeding $200 billion annually in the U.S.
Drug interactions occur when one medication alters the effect of another, leading to unexpected or adverse outcomes. These interactions can be pharmacodynamic, where drugs with similar or opposing effects are used concurrently, or pharmacokinetic, where one drug affects the absorption, distribution, metabolism, or excretion of another. Understanding these interactions is essential for safe and effective patient care.

Regular medication reviews, patient education, and the use of clinical decision support systems can help mitigate risks. Additionally, incorporating pharmacogenomics into practice can provide valuable insights into individual patient drug responses, further enhancing personalized care.
The complexity of polypharmacy and drug interactions in modern healthcare is a significant challenge requiring concerted efforts from all healthcare professionals. By understanding this complexity and implementing strategies to manage it, we can enhance patient safety, improve health outcomes, and reduce healthcare costs. As we continue to unravel this complexity, we must remain committed to patient-centered care and the judicious use of pharmacotherapy.
