Addressing tobacco addiction is a crucial component of comprehensive patient care. As healthcare professionals, we play a pivotal role in guiding patients through smoking cessation.
First-line medications such as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), bupropion, and varenicline have been proven significantly effective. They are recommended for all patients attempting to quit, unless contraindicated.
Combining pharmacotherapy with behavioural interventions enhances success rates. Cognitive-behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, and self-help resources can help patients to cope with cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
Intensive intervention programs involving multiple sessions over a prolonged period have shown higher success rates compared to less intensive interventions. Such programs often include a combination of medication, behavioural therapy, and support groups.
Regular follow-ups are essential to assess progress, manage withdrawal symptoms, and prevent relapse. Encouragement and reinforcement of smoke-free behaviour are vital during this phase.
Smoking cessation requires a multifaceted approach. By integrating pharmacological strategies, behavioural interventions, intensive intervention programs, and consistent follow-up, we can significantly enhance our patients' chances of successfully quitting smoking.
