Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) continues to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This necessitates the constant evolution of its management strategies to improve patient outcomes. This article discusses recent advancements in ACS management.
Pharmacotherapy remains a cornerstone in ACS management. Novel antiplatelet agents such as ticagrelor and prasugrel have shown superiority over clopidogrel in reducing cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Furthermore, the introduction of non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) provides an alternative to warfarin with a better safety profile.
Developments in interventional cardiology, particularly in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), have significantly improved ACS outcomes. The introduction of drug-eluting stents has reduced the risk of restenosis. Additionally, the evolution of techniques, such as radial access and intravascular imaging, has enhanced procedural success and patient safety.
Cardiac rehabilitation is increasingly recognized as an essential component of ACS management. Structured exercise programs, dietary advice, psychological support, and medication adherence counseling have been shown to improve quality of life and reduce rehospitalization rates.
The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of telemedicine in ACS management. Remote patient monitoring and virtual consultations allow for timely intervention and reduce the need for hospital visits, thereby minimizing exposure risk and conserving healthcare resources.
In conclusion, the management of ACS has considerably evolved over the years, with advances in pharmacotherapy, interventional techniques, cardiac rehabilitation, and telemedicine. Continued research and innovation are necessary to further improve patient outcomes in this critical area of cardiology.
