It primarily affects lipid metabolism, leading to an excess of harmful LDL-C and triglycerides or a deficiency of beneficial HDL-C in the bloodstream.
Dyslipidemia is typically diagnosed through lipid panel blood tests, which measure total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, and triglycerides. It's important to interpret these results in the context of the patient's overall cardiovascular risk, considering factors such as age, sex, smoking status, and presence of hypertension or diabetes.
Management strategies for dyslipidemia include lifestyle modifications and pharmacotherapy. Lifestyle interventions focus on dietary changes, increased physical activity, weight management, and smoking cessation. Pharmacotherapy typically involves statins, which reduce LDL-C levels. Other drugs such as fibrates, niacin, and ezetimibe may be used based on individual patient needs and tolerability.
Understanding and managing dyslipidemia is crucial in clinical practice to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Clinicians should be well-versed in the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of this condition. Ongoing research may further refine our understanding and provide more effective strategies for managing dyslipidemia in the future.
