The gold standard for diagnosis is right heart catheterization, which provides direct measurement of pulmonary artery pressure. Non-invasive tests such as echocardiography and cardiac MRI can also provide valuable diagnostic information.
Treatment strategies for PH aim to alleviate symptoms, slow disease progression, and improve quality of life. Medications like endothelin receptor antagonists, phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, and prostacyclin analogues are commonly used. In severe cases, lung transplantation may be considered.
Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in the management of PH patients. Regular monitoring of disease progression, adjusting treatment plans, and providing patient education are key responsibilities. Multidisciplinary care involving cardiologists, pulmonologists, and primary care physicians is often beneficial.
