Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects predominately dopamine-producing neurons in a specific area of the brain called substantia nigra. It is a complex disease that requires healthcare professionals to have a comprehensive understanding for effective management.
PD affects approximately 1% of individuals aged 60 years and above, with men being 1.5 times more likely to have the disease than women. The major risk factors include age, genetic predisposition, and exposure to certain environmental factors such as pesticides.
PD is primarily characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta, leading to a decrease in striatal dopamine levels. This imbalance in the basal ganglia circuitry results in motor and non-motor symptoms associated with PD.
PD typically presents with motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, rest tremor, and postural instability. Non-motor symptoms, including cognitive impairment, mood disorders, autonomic dysfunction, and sleep disturbances, can also significantly impact the quality of life of PD patients.
Diagnosis of PD is primarily clinical, based on history and neurological examination. Neuroimaging and biomarkers can support the diagnosis but are not definitive. Management of PD is symptomatic, focusing on improving quality of life. Pharmacological interventions primarily aim to restore dopamine levels, while non-pharmacological interventions include physical therapy and lifestyle modifications.
Understanding PD's complexities is crucial for healthcare professionals to provide optimal patient care. Continued research into the pathophysiology, risk factors, and potential therapies is essential to improve the prognosis and quality of life of individuals with PD.
