Elevated liver enzymes are a common clinical conundrum faced by physicians worldwide. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) are the most commonly evaluated liver enzymes. Their elevation signifies hepatocellular injury. Treatment is primarily aimed at managing the underlying cause. Lifestyle modifications and avoidance of hepatotoxic substances form the cornerstone of management. In cases of chronic liver disease, regular follow-up with liver function tests and imaging is crucial to monitor disease progression and response to therapy.
Managing elevated liver enzymes is a multifaceted task that requires a systematic approach, considering the wide array of potential etiologies. A thorough history, physical examination, appropriate investigations, and targeted treatment form the mainstay of management. Regular follow-up and patient education are also crucial in ensuring optimal patient outcomes.
