The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a global health crisis, often attributed to the misuse and overuse of antibiotics. Therefore, promoting rational use of these drugs is essential to mitigate this issue and improve patient health.
Rational use of antibiotics involves prescribing the right drug, at the right dose, for the right duration, and at the right time. It requires a balance between the benefits of treatment and potential harm, including the risk of resistance. Accurate diagnosis, based on clinical findings and, where necessary, microbiological testing, is the cornerstone of rational antibiotic use.
Antibiotic stewardship programs (ASPs) are coordinated efforts to improve and measure the appropriate use of antibiotics. ASPs can significantly reduce hospital antibiotic resistance rates and healthcare-associated infections. They involve a multidisciplinary team and incorporate clinical guidelines, education, and surveillance systems.
Education about the risks and benefits of antibiotics for healthcare professionals, patients, and the public is crucial. Effective communication between healthcare professionals and patients can help manage expectations and promote understanding of when antibiotics are necessary and when they are not.
Regulatory and policy measures can also support the rational use of antibiotics. This includes policies on antibiotic prescription, sales, and use in agriculture, as well as regulations on antibiotic promotion and access.
Addressing the challenge of antibiotic resistance requires a comprehensive approach that promotes the rational use of antibiotics in clinical practice. Through accurate diagnosis, antibiotic stewardship programs, education, communication, and supportive regulatory and policy measures, we can promote patient health and combat antibiotic resistance.
