Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health concern, necessitating innovative diagnostic strategies to improve detection and treatment outcomes. This article reviews recent advancements in TB detection, focusing on the current diagnostic strategies.
GeneXpert MTB/RIF, a molecular test for TB, has revolutionized TB diagnosis. This automated nucleic acid amplification test identifies Mycobacterium tuberculosis and rifampicin resistance within hours, offering a significant improvement over conventional microscopy and culture methods.
Line Probe Assays (LPAs) provide rapid detection of TB and drug resistance. These molecular tests, including the Genotype MTBDRplus and Genotype MTBDRsl, can identify mutations associated with resistance to first and second-line anti-TB drugs.
Emerging technologies like ultra-sensitive rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) offer promise for TB detection. These tests, such as Fujifilm SILVAMP TB LAM (FujiLAM), detect low concentrations of lipoarabinomannan (LAM) in urine, providing results in less than an hour.
Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) has potential for TB diagnosis and resistance prediction. By analyzing the entire genome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, WGS can identify all known and novel resistance-conferring mutations, offering a comprehensive view of drug resistance.
Advancements in TB detection are transforming the diagnostic landscape, enabling faster and more accurate detection of TB and drug resistance. However, the integration of these technologies into routine clinical practice requires further research and investment. Continued innovation and collaboration are crucial to enhance TB diagnosis and ultimately, control this global health threat.
