Stroke remains one of the leading causes of mortality and long-term disability worldwide. The key to reducing the devastating impact of this disease lies in early recognition and prompt management. This article provides an overview of the crucial signs and symptoms of stroke and the current best practices for immediate management.
Healthcare professionals must be adept at identifying the cardinal signs of stroke, encapsulated in the acronym FAST: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time to call emergency services. However, other symptoms such as sudden confusion, trouble seeing, loss of balance, or severe headache with no known cause should also raise suspicion.
Once a stroke is suspected, immediate assessment using validated tools like the NIH Stroke Scale is crucial. Imaging studies, primarily a non-contrast CT scan, are essential to differentiate between ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, which will guide subsequent management.
Time is of the essence when managing a stroke. For ischemic strokes, intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) can be administered if within 4.5 hours of symptom onset. Mechanical thrombectomy is also an option for large vessel occlusion. Hemorrhagic strokes may require surgical intervention and careful blood pressure control.
After the acute phase, the focus shifts to secondary prevention to reduce the risk of recurrent stroke. This includes management of modifiable risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia, and the use of antiplatelet or anticoagulant medications as indicated.
Early recognition and prompt management of stroke can significantly improve patient outcomes. By remaining vigilant for the signs of stroke and implementing timely interventions, healthcare professionals can play a pivotal role in reducing the burden of this devastating disease.
