Physical examination should include assessment of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, and may involve diagnostic tests such as chest X-ray, spirometry, and echocardiography.
The management of dyspnea primarily involves treating the underlying cause. This could include pharmacological treatments for conditions such as COPD or heart failure, or non-pharmacological approaches like pulmonary rehabilitation for chronic dyspnea. Additionally, addressing anxiety, which often coexists with dyspnea, can be beneficial.
Given the subjective nature of dyspnea, a patient-centered approach is paramount. This involves understanding the patient's experiences, concerns, and goals, and incorporating them into the management plan. It may also involve multidisciplinary teams, including physiotherapists, psychologists, and social workers.
Dyspnea is a complex symptom with diverse causes, necessitating a comprehensive, patient-centered approach. By thoroughly understanding the symptom, conducting a detailed clinical assessment, and tailoring the management strategy to the individual patient, healthcare professionals can effectively alleviate dyspnea and improve patients' quality of life.
