As the prevalence of hypertension continues to increase globally, it is crucial for healthcare professionals to stay abreast of the latest management strategies. This article aims to provide a comprehensive update on modern approaches to hypertension management.
First-line intervention for hypertension typically involves lifestyle modifications. These include dietary changes such as the DASH diet, increased physical activity, weight management, and limiting alcohol and sodium intake. Recent studies have highlighted the role of stress management and sleep hygiene in blood pressure control, suggesting a more holistic approach to patient care.
Pharmacological treatment remains a cornerstone in hypertension management. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers, and thiazide diuretics are commonly prescribed. However, the recent SPRINT trial has shown that more aggressive blood pressure targets can lead to better patient outcomes, prompting a re-evaluation of treatment guidelines.
Emerging therapies for hypertension include the use of renal denervation and baroreceptor activation therapy. These novel interventions, while promising, are currently recommended only for resistant hypertension. Further research is needed to determine their place in routine hypertension management.
