Acute and preventive pharmacological interventions form the cornerstone of migraine management. Acute treatments aim to alleviate symptoms during an attack, with options including triptans, ergotamines, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Preventive treatments, such as beta-blockers, antiepileptics, and CGRP inhibitors, are used to reduce attack frequency and severity. The choice of therapy must consider the patient's comorbidities, contraindications, and personal preferences.
Non-pharmacological strategies are integral to a comprehensive management plan. Cognitive-behavioral therapy can help patients manage stress, a common trigger. Biofeedback and relaxation techniques may also reduce attack frequency. Dietary modifications and regular exercise can improve overall health and potentially decrease migraine severity.

Additionally, research into the role of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) has led to the development of novel preventive treatments.

Neurologists, primary care physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals must work collaboratively to ensure optimal patient care. This includes regular communication, coordination of treatments, and shared decision-making with the patient.
Managing migraines requires a comprehensive, patient-centered approach that combines pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies. Emerging therapies and interprofessional collaboration offer exciting avenues for further improving patient outcomes. By staying abreast of the latest research and best practices, healthcare professionals can significantly impact the lives of patients living with this debilitating condition.
