FVC reflects the maximum volume of air that can be forcibly exhaled after full inspiration, while FEV1 represents the volume exhaled during the first second of this maneuver. The FEV1/FVC ratio aids in distinguishing obstructive from restrictive patterns.
An obstructive pattern is characterized by reduced FEV1 and FEV1/FVC ratio, with normal or increased FVC. This pattern is typical of conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma. On the other hand, a restrictive pattern features reduced FVC with a normal or increased FEV1/FVC ratio, seen in diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis.
The severity of a pulmonary condition is gauged using the percent predicted value of FEV1. A value less than 80% of the predicted suggests the presence of disease, with lower values indicating greater severity. It's crucial to consider patient symptoms and clinical context when interpreting these values.
Interpreting PFTs is a nuanced process, requiring a sound understanding of respiratory physiology and clinical context. Recognizing the basic patterns and parameters can significantly aid in diagnosing and managing respiratory diseases.
