Immunotherapy leverages the body's immune system to fight cancer. This approach can be broadly categorized into two: active immunotherapy, which stimulates the patient's immune response, and passive immunotherapy, which involves administering immune system components to the patient.
There are several types of immunotherapy, including monoclonal antibodies, immune checkpoint inhibitors, cancer vaccines, and adoptive cell therapy. Each of these types has specific mechanisms of action and indications, making it crucial for physicians to understand their nuances.
Immunotherapy can be used as a standalone treatment or in combination with other therapies. It has shown promising results in various cancers, including melanoma, lung cancer, and lymphoma. However, not all patients respond to immunotherapy, and some may experience significant side effects. Thus, patient selection is key.
