The fight against Tuberculosis (TB) has been significantly bolstered by the advent of novel diagnostic tools and techniques. These innovations have improved our ability to detect and manage TB, particularly in high-burden settings.
GeneXpert MTB/RIF has revolutionized TB diagnosis. This automated, cartridge-based nucleic acid amplification test provides results within two hours and simultaneously detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis and rifampicin resistance, enabling rapid initiation of appropriate therapy.
Line Probe Assays (LPAs) are WHO-endorsed molecular tests, which detect TB and resistance to first- and second-line drugs. LPAs provide results in 48 hours, significantly reducing the time to diagnosis and treatment initiation.
Digital radiography, combined with artificial intelligence, is a promising tool for TB detection. Automated software can identify abnormal patterns in chest radiographs indicative of TB, increasing diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.
Urine Lipoarabinomannan (LAM) testing is a rapid, low-cost method that is particularly useful for diagnosing TB in HIV-positive patients and those with advanced disease.
These advancements have significantly improved TB diagnosis, enabling earlier detection and treatment initiation. However, the challenge remains to ensure these innovations are accessible and implemented in all settings, particularly where TB burden is highest.
