Fever is a complex physiological response triggered by pyrogens, which stimulate the hypothalamus to increase the body's set temperature. Pyrogens can be exogenous, originating from pathogens, or endogenous, released by activated immune cells. Understanding this mechanism is critical for effective fever management.
Accurate assessment is the cornerstone of fever management. Apart from temperature measurement, a thorough history and physical examination are required to identify potential sources of infection or inflammation. Laboratory tests may be needed in some cases to aid diagnosis.
Treatment should be tailored according to the cause and severity of the fever. Mild to moderate fevers can be managed with antipyretics like paracetamol and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
