Cardiovascular risk assessment in diabetic patients is a multifaceted process. Key factors to consider include age, sex, ethnicity, smoking status, blood pressure, lipid profile, and kidney function. Tools such as the Framingham Risk Score can aid in quantifying cardiovascular risk.
Hyperglycemia is a significant contributor to cardiovascular disease in diabetes. Achieving optimal glycemic control with the help of antidiabetic medications is critical. However, the choice of medication should be individualized, taking into account the patient's cardiovascular risk profile.
Encouraging lifestyle modifications is a cornerstone of cardiovascular risk reduction in diabetic patients. This includes promoting a healthy diet, regular physical activity, smoking cessation, and weight management. These interventions can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.
