It is the first FDA-approved antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) for the treatment of relapsed or refractory B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Blinatumomab works by targeting CD19, a protein expressed on the surface of B cells. CD19 is a co-receptor for the B cell receptor (BCR), which is essential for B cell proliferation, survival, and differentiation. Blinatumomab binds to CD19 and internalizes into the B cell, where it releases an immunotoxin that selectively kills the cancerous B cell.
Blinatumomab has shown remarkable efficacy in clinical trials, with overall response rates of up to 75%.
