You should not use Atacand if you are allergic to candesartan or if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to another ARB medicine such as benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), fosinopril (Monopril), enalapril (Vasotec), irbesartan (Avapro), losartan (Cozaar), olmesartan (Benicar), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), telmisartan (Micardis) or valsartan (Diovan). ARBs work by blocking the action of a hormone called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II makes your blood vessels constrict, which raises your blood pressure. By blocking the action of angiotensin II, Atacand relaxes your blood vessels and lowers your blood pressure.
Atacand is an effective medication for lowering blood pressure. In clinical studies, it has been shown to lower systolic blood pressure by an average of 8mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by an average of 5mmHg in people with hypertension. It is also well tolerated, with the most common side effects being headache, dizziness, and upper respiratory tract infections.
