Ayurveda, one of the world's oldest traditional systems of medicine, offers a holistic approach to optimizing growth during childhood, emphasizing dietary, lifestyle, and herbal interventions. This review synthesizes recent scientific evidence and classical Ayurvedic principles to elucidate the mechanisms, clinical applications, and practical implications of Ayurvedic growth optimization interventions, with a focus on their integration within contemporary pediatric care.
Normal childhood growth is critical for long-term health outcomes, with suboptimal growth associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Despite advancements in modern pediatric care, growth faltering remains a global concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Ayurveda, rooted in the concepts of balance and individualized care, provides a complementary framework for addressing growth challenges through personalized nutrition, herbal supplementation, and lifestyle regulation. This article explores the scientific and clinical basis of Ayurvedic interventions in the context of childhood growth, aiming to inform physicians and healthcare professionals about evidence-based strategies for growth optimization.
Globally, stunting affects approximately 22% of children under five, with higher prevalence rates in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Malnutrition, infectious diseases, and socioeconomic disparities are key contributors. In India, undernutrition is a major public health issue, with significant implications for cognitive and physical development. While conventional interventions have reduced the disease burden, a substantial number of children remain at risk, highlighting the need for integrative approaches such as those offered by Ayurveda to address the multifactorial nature of growth disorders.
Growth depends on a complex interplay of hormonal, nutritional, and psychosocial factors. The hypothalamic-pituitary-growth axis regulates the secretion of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), which are critical mediators of linear growth. Malnutrition, systemic inflammation, and chronic illnesses disrupt this axis, leading to growth impairment. Ayurveda conceptualizes growth in terms of "Bala" (strength) and "Dhatu Poshana" (tissue nourishment), emphasizing the importance of optimal "Agni" (digestive/metabolic fire) and balanced "Doshas" (functional bioelements) for healthy development. Professional bodies recommend routine growth monitoring, early identification of faltering growth, and prompt intervention. Integrative guidelines suggest the inclusion of safe and evidence-based Ayurvedic interventions alongside conventional care. Recent advances underscore the scientific rationale and clinical relevance of classical interventions, supporting their integration into contemporary practice. Ongoing research and interdisciplinary collaboration are essential to refine protocols, establish robust evidence, and maximize the benefits of Ayurvedic strategies for childhood growth and development.
