This can cause changes in the structure and function of the blood vessels.
LCV is usually caused by an autoimmune reaction to a viral or bacterial infection. In some cases, it may be caused by medications, such as penicillin or sulfonamides. LCV can also be associated with certain cancers, such as lymphoma.

Most people with the condition make a full recovery within a few months to a year, although some may experience relapses. In rare cases, leukocytoclastic vasculitis can be fatal, particularly if it affects vital organs such as the brain or heart.
