Acute chest pain (ACP) poses a diagnostic challenge due to its varied etiologies. The clinical approach to ACP management requires a comprehensive understanding of differential diagnoses and effective treatment strategies.
A thorough patient history and physical examination are crucial. The characteristics of the pain, associated symptoms, and risk factors can guide towards the correct diagnosis. ECG and biomarker testing are essential in ruling out acute coronary syndrome.
Advanced imaging modalities like CT angiography and stress testing can aid in diagnosing non-cardiac chest pain. These tools can identify pulmonary embolism, aortic dissection, and other life-threatening conditions.
Once the cause is identified, treatment should be initiated promptly. For cardiac-related ACP, anti-ischemic therapy, revascularization procedures, and lifestyle modifications are effective. In non-cardiac chest pain, treatment should target the underlying cause.
ACP is a common yet complex clinical presentation. A systematic approach to evaluation, coupled with a thorough understanding of its diverse etiologies, can lead to accurate diagnoses and effective management. It is essential to continually update our knowledge and skills in managing ACP to provide optimal patient care.
