Liver cirrhosis, a chronic liver disease characterized by fibrosis and the formation of regenerative nodules, leads to progressive loss of liver function. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the complications associated with liver cirrhosis and their management strategies.
Ascites, the most common complication of cirrhosis, often precedes the development of SBP. Management involves sodium restriction, diuretics, and therapeutic paracentesis. Antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended for patients at high risk of SBP.
HE is a neuropsychiatric disorder caused by liver dysfunction and portosystemic shunting. Treatment includes the reduction of ammonia production and absorption through non-absorbable disaccharides and antibiotics.
Portal hypertension can lead to the development of gastroesophageal varices, with a high risk of bleeding. Primary prophylaxis with non-selective beta-blockers and endoscopic band ligation are effective in preventing the first bleeding episode.
HRS is a functional renal failure in patients with advanced cirrhosis. The management includes volume expansion with albumin and vasoconstrictors to improve renal perfusion.
HCC is a leading cause of death in cirrhotic patients. Surveillance with biannual ultrasound is recommended for early detection and treatment.
Understanding and managing complications associated with liver cirrhosis is crucial to improving patient outcomes. Early detection and appropriate treatment strategies can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality. Continued research is needed to further refine these strategies and develop new therapeutic options.
