Osteoporosis, a systemic skeletal disease, is characterized by low bone mass and architectural deterioration, leading to increased bone fragility. With an aging population, the burden of osteoporosis is rising, making its effective management imperative. This article aims to outline recent advancements and existing challenges in osteoporosis management.
Recent years have seen significant advancements in osteoporosis diagnostics and therapeutics. High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) and trabecular bone score (TBS) have improved the assessment of bone quality. Therapeutically, new drugs such as Romosozumab, a monoclonal antibody, have shown promising results in increasing bone formation and decreasing bone resorption.
Despite advancements, challenges persist. Identifying individuals at risk remains difficult due to the asymptomatic nature of osteoporosis until a fracture occurs. Adherence to medication is another challenge due to side effects and the perception that osteoporosis is a natural part of aging. Furthermore, the long-term safety of new drugs is yet to be established.
Healthcare professionals play a pivotal role in managing osteoporosis. They need to educate patients about the importance of regular bone health checks, proper nutrition, and exercise. They also need to address patients' concerns about medication side effects and emphasize the necessity of adherence to treatment plans.
While advancements in osteoporosis management have improved patient outcomes, challenges persist. Healthcare professionals need to take a proactive approach in educating patients, promoting early detection, and ensuring adherence to treatment plans. As research progresses, it is hoped that the management of osteoporosis will continue to improve, reducing the burden of this debilitating disease.
