In iron deficiency anemia, serum iron and ferritin levels are typically low, while in thalassemia and anemia of chronic disease, they are usually normal or elevated.
Normocytic anemia could be a result of chronic disease, acute blood loss, or bone marrow dysfunction. Macrocytic anemia, on the other hand, is often linked to vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, medication side effects, or myelodysplastic syndromes. Specific tests can help identify the underlying cause.
