Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition commonly overshadowed by its alcohol-induced counterpart, is steadily gaining recognition in the medical realm. As the prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes surges globally, NAFLD, a frequent comorbidity, is emerging as a significant public health concern.
NAFLD is a spectrum of liver disorders, ranging from simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. It is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide, affecting approximately 25% of the global population. The silent nature of NAFLD, often asymptomatic until advanced stages, poses a significant challenge to timely diagnosis and treatment.
NAFLD is closely associated with metabolic syndrome, characterised by insulin resistance, obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. This association highlights the need for a comprehensive approach in managing NAFLD, focusing not only on liver disease but also on the underlying metabolic abnormalities.
Management of NAFLD primarily involves lifestyle modifications aimed at weight loss and increased physical activity. Pharmacological interventions, including insulin sensitizers, antioxidants, and lipid-lowering agents, are currently under investigation. The role of bariatric surgery in managing NAFLD in severely obese individuals is also being explored.
NAFLD is a silent epidemic with significant implications for healthcare systems worldwide. Early recognition and a comprehensive approach to management, encompassing lifestyle modifications and potential pharmacological interventions, are crucial to mitigating the impact of this disease. As healthcare professionals, we must remain abreast of the evolving understanding of NAFLD to provide optimal patient care.
