Portal hypertension, a common cirrhosis complication, results from increased resistance to portal blood flow. Management strategies include non-selective beta-blockers and endoscopic band ligation for primary and secondary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding.
This neuropsychiatric complication results from the liver's inability to detoxify the blood. Management includes the use of lactulose and rifaximin to reduce serum ammonia levels, and careful monitoring of electrolyte balance.
