Normal body temperature ranges from 36.5 to 37.5 degrees Celsius. Deviations may indicate infection, inflammation, or other systemic conditions. Hypothermia (<36.5°C) and hyperthermia (>37.5°C) require immediate attention as they may suggest serious underlying conditions or exposure to extreme environmental conditions.
A normal resting heart rate for adults ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute. Tachycardia (>100 beats per minute) may be indicative of stress, infection, or cardiovascular disease, while bradycardia (<60 beats per minute) can signal a potential heart block or the effect of certain medications.
Normal blood pressure typically falls within the range of 90/60 mmHg to 120/80 mmHg. Hypertension (systolic >140 mmHg or diastolic >90 mmHg) can be a sign of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, or endocrine disorders. Hypotension (systolic <90 mmHg or diastolic <60 mmHg) may indicate dehydration, blood loss, or septic shock.
For healthy adults at rest, a normal respiratory rate should be between 12 and 20 breaths per minute. Tachypnea (>20 breaths per minute) can suggest respiratory disease, metabolic acidosis, or sepsis, while bradypnea (<12 breaths per minute) may be seen in drug overdose, head injury, or during certain sleep disorders.
Recognizing deviations in vital signs is a fundamental aspect of patient assessment in clinical practice. Early detection and appropriate response can significantly improve patient outcomes. Continual education and practice are essential in maintaining these critical skills.
