Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The management of ACS has drastically evolved over the past few decades, leading to improved patient outcomes. This article aims to provide an overview of the latest advancements in ACS management.
Novel pharmacotherapies have transformed ACS management. The introduction of potent antiplatelet agents such as Ticagrelor and Prasugrel has reduced ischemic events post-ACS. Additionally, the use of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) in selected patients has demonstrated a reduction in cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, and stroke.
Interventional cardiology has seen significant advancements in ACS management. The widespread adoption of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has substantially improved survival rates in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Furthermore, the development of drug-eluting stents has reduced the risk of in-stent restenosis. More recently, the use of mechanical circulatory support devices in high-risk patients has shown promise.
Improved risk stratification tools have enhanced ACS management by enabling personalized treatment strategies. High-sensitivity cardiac troponin assays have improved early diagnosis, while the GRACE and TIMI risk scores have facilitated risk stratification, guiding therapeutic decisions.
Secondary prevention strategies have become an integral part of ACS management. The emphasis on aggressive lipid-lowering therapy, lifestyle modification, and cardiac rehabilitation has led to a reduction in recurrent events and improved quality of life.
The management of ACS continues to evolve with advancements in pharmacotherapy, interventional cardiology, risk stratification, and secondary prevention. These developments have led to improved patient outcomes, emphasizing the importance of staying abreast with the latest advancements in this rapidly evolving field.
