Immunotherapy, a groundbreaking approach in the field of oncology, has significantly altered the treatment landscape for various malignancies. Immunotherapy operates on the principle of stimulating or restoring the immune system's capacity to combat diseases. Unlike chemotherapy or radiation therapy, which directly target cancer cells, immunotherapy makes the body's defense mechanism robust enough to identify and destroy cancer cells.
There are several types of immunotherapy, including monoclonal antibodies, immune checkpoint inhibitors, cancer vaccines, and adoptive cell transfer. Each type functions differently but all aim to boost or restore immune function.

Cancer vaccines work by triggering the immune system to attack specific diseases. In contrast, adoptive cell transfer involves modifying a patient's T-cells in a laboratory to enhance their ability to fight cancer, and then reintroducing them into the patient's body.
Immunotherapy has revolutionized cancer treatment, offering hope to many patients who had limited options previously. As our understanding of the immune system deepens, the potential for new and improved immunotherapies continues to grow. It is crucial for physicians to understand these fundamentals to effectively incorporate immunotherapy into their treatment regimens and to manage potential side effects.
