Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common, yet under-recognised chronic liver condition. It’s associated with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, often leading to significant morbidity and mortality. This article provides an overview of NAFLD, its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies.
Prevention of NAFLD focuses on addressing modifiable risk factors. Lifestyle modifications including healthy dietary habits and physical activity are recommended. Weight loss, in particular, has been shown to reduce hepatic steatosis. Additionally, managing associated conditions such as diabetes and hyperlipidemia can prevent NAFLD progression.
NAFLD diagnosis involves clinical suspicion in patients with risk factors, supported by imaging and laboratory tests. The gold standard for diagnosis and staging is liver biopsy, though non-invasive methods like ultrasound and blood tests are commonly used due to their convenience and lower risk.
Currently, there are no FDA-approved medications specifically for NAFLD. Treatment primarily involves managing underlying conditions and risk factors. Weight loss, achieved through diet and exercise, is the most effective treatment. In more advanced cases, liver transplantation may be considered.
NAFLD is a significant health concern that often goes unnoticed until advanced stages. Early identification and intervention can prevent progression and complications. As healthcare professionals, understanding NAFLD, its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies is crucial to improving patient outcomes.
