Early detection of anemia relies on the identification of 'red flags' - symptoms that may indicate a serious underlying condition. These include fatigue, pallor, dyspnea, and tachycardia. More concerning signs such as chest pain, syncope, and signs of heart failure should prompt immediate further investigation. It's crucial to remember that anemia might be a manifestation of a systemic disease, thus a thorough clinical history and physical examination are paramount.
The first step in the diagnostic approach involves laboratory testing, primarily complete blood count (CBC) and reticulocyte count.
