India, with its diverse climatic conditions and high population density, presents a significant burden of vector-borne diseases (VBDs). These diseases, transmitted by vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, and flies, pose substantial challenges to the public health system.
India is endemic to several VBDs, including malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and Japanese encephalitis. Despite concerted efforts, India accounts for 4% of global malaria cases. Dengue cases have shown an alarming rise, with a 300% increase in the past decade. Chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis also persistently contribute to the disease burden.
VBDs cause significant morbidity and mortality, straining India's healthcare system. They disrupt socio-economic development and pose a substantial threat to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The economic burden of these diseases is immense, with an estimated annual cost of USD 1.34 billion for malaria alone.
India's fight against VBDs is marred by inadequate surveillance, limited resources, and climate change. However, opportunities exist in the form of improved diagnostic tools, vector control strategies, and vaccines. The recent launch of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) signifies a step in the right direction.
Vector-borne diseases remain a significant public health challenge in India, necessitating a comprehensive, multi-pronged approach. There is a pressing need for improved surveillance, early diagnosis, effective management, and preventive measures. As healthcare professionals, our role extends beyond clinical management to advocacy, research, and education, contributing to a robust response against VBDs.
