Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as a significant global health concern, with a prevalence rate estimated at 25% worldwide. It is characterized by excessive hepatic fat accumulation not attributable to alcohol consumption.
NAFLD pathogenesis is multifaceted, involving insulin resistance, oxidative stress, lipotoxicity, and systemic inflammation. These factors contribute to a spectrum of disease severity, from simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis, cirrhosis, and potentially hepatocellular carcinoma.
NAFLD prevalence is rising rapidly due to the global obesity epidemic and increasing incidence of type 2 diabetes. It is now the most common chronic liver disease in Western countries, with a higher prevalence in individuals with metabolic syndrome.
Early identification and proactive management of NAFLD are crucial to prevent progression to cirrhosis and liver failure. Lifestyle modifications, including weight loss and regular exercise, form the cornerstone of NAFLD management. Pharmacotherapy is reserved for patients with NASH and significant fibrosis, and includes agents that target insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and inflammation.
In conclusion, NAFLD represents a significant global health challenge. Understanding the pathogenesis and prevalence of NAFLD is essential for healthcare professionals, allowing for proactive management strategies and ultimately improving patient outcomes.
