Recent advances have elucidated the multifactorial etiology of these conditions, emphasizing the pivotal role of environmental factors in both their onset and exacerbation. This review synthesizes recent clinical and scientific evidence pertaining to the environmental prevention of chronic inflammatory skin diseases, integrating epidemiological data, pathophysiological insights, risk stratification, and practical management strategies. Particular attention is given to emerging preventive interventions, guideline recommendations, and areas for future research, aiming to inform evidence-based clinical practice and public health policy.

Introduction

Chronic inflammatory skin diseases are increasingly prevalent globally, exerting a substantial burden on patients quality of life and healthcare systems. Their complex pathogenesis involves a dynamic interplay of genetic susceptibility and environmental exposures. While therapeutic options have expanded, prevention particularly through environmental modification remains underutilized. Understanding environmental determinants and integrating preventive strategies into routine clinical care are essential for effective management and reducing disease incidence.

Epidemiology / Disease Burden

Chronic inflammatory skin diseases afflict millions worldwide, with atopic dermatitis affecting up to 20% of children and 3% of adults, and psoriasis impacting approximately 2–3% of the global population. The socioeconomic burden is considerable, with direct costs related to healthcare utilization and indirect costs from work absenteeism and diminished productivity. Disease prevalence is rising, particularly in urbanized and industrialized settings, implicating environmental changes as key contributors. Treatment & Management

Topical corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors, and systemic immunomodulators form the cornerstone of therapy. Adjunctive measures include regular emollient use, avoidance of known irritants and allergens, and patient education regarding environmental risk mitigation. Environmental interventions such as air filtration, humidification, and occupational safety measures have demonstrated efficacy in reducing disease severity and flare frequency. Recent Advances / Emerging Therapies

Recent research has yielded novel insights and preventive strategies targeting environmental determinants of skin inflammation. Patient education regarding skin care, environmental hygiene, and occupational safety is strongly endorsed. Guidelines increasingly recognize the need for multidisciplinary collaboration and public health interventions to address broader environmental determinants of skin disease.

Environmental prevention represents a critical yet underutilized strategy in the management of chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Integration of environmental risk assessment, patient education, and preventive interventions into clinical practice can substantially reduce disease burden and improve patient outcomes.
