Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) represent a significant public health concern in India, contributing to a significant burden of morbidity and mortality. This article provides a comprehensive review of the prevalence and impact of VBDs in India, aiming to equip healthcare professionals with a deeper understanding of the current landscape.
India is endemic to several VBDs, including malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. According to the World Health Organization, India reported 6.7 million cases of malaria in 2018, representing 4% of the global total. Similarly, dengue cases have surged over the last decade, with over 101,000 cases reported in 2019. Chikungunya, though less prevalent, has seen sporadic outbreaks, causing significant public health concern.
VBDs exert a profound impact on India's public health system and economy. They strain healthcare resources, leading to increased healthcare costs and reduced productivity due to illness. The economic burden of malaria alone is estimated at $1.94 billion annually. Furthermore, the indirect costs associated with loss of productivity due to illness significantly affect India's economic growth.
Addressing VBDs in India requires overcoming several challenges, including inadequate vector control, diagnostic delays, and treatment gaps. The country's diverse topography and climate also contribute to the complexity of vector control. Moving forward, strengthening surveillance systems, improving diagnostic capabilities, and implementing effective vector control strategies are crucial to curbing the prevalence and impact of VBDs.
VBDs pose a significant threat to India's public health and economy. Understanding their prevalence and impact is crucial for healthcare professionals in formulating effective strategies for prevention and control. As we move forward, concerted efforts from all stakeholders are required to mitigate the burden of these diseases and safeguard public health.
