Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is often referred to as the “silent killer” because it can have serious health consequences without any obvious symptoms. Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. It is estimated that one in three adults in the United States has hypertension, and the number is growing. It is important for doctors to understand the causes, effects, and treatments of hypertension, as well as how to help their patients manage their blood pressure.
Hypertension is a condition in which the pressure of the blood against the walls of the arteries is consistently higher than normal. It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Normal blood pressure is considered to be 120/80 mmHg. When the top number (systolic pressure) is higher than 140 mmHg or the bottom number (diastolic pressure) is higher than 90 mmHg, it is considered to be hypertension.
The exact cause of hypertension is not known, but there are several factors that can increase the risk of developing the condition. These include age, family history, obesity, smoking, lack of physical activity, stress, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, and sleep apnea.
Hypertension can have serious effects on the body. It can damage the heart, arteries, and other organs. It increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. It can also cause kidney damage, vision loss, and cognitive decline.
Hypertension is usually diagnosed with a physical exam and blood tests. If hypertension is present, the doctor may recommend lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and reducing stress. The doctor may also prescribe medication to help control blood pressure.
In addition to lifestyle changes and medication, there are several other ways to help manage hypertension. These include monitoring blood pressure regularly, limiting alcohol consumption, avoiding certain medications, and avoiding foods high in sodium and saturated fat.
Hypertension is a serious condition that can have serious health consequences. It is important for doctors to understand the causes, effects, and treatments of hypertension, as well as how to help their patients manage their blood pressure. With proper diagnosis, treatment, and management, hypertension can be controlled and the risks of serious health complications can be reduced.
